Drought tolerance analysis in grasses

In order to identify crops that have potential use for a high and stable biomass production on marginal land and under diverse abiotic stress conditions, different C3 grasses and C4 miscanthus will be analysed for drought tolerance on two different soil types at Aarhus University, Denmark (Figure 1 and 2).

Nine different grasses have been established for drought tolerance analysis in 1 m2 plots.

The preliminary experiments in 2014 show that some cultivars react to drought by e.g. coiling up the leaves (Figure 3). In addition, the results from the leaf water potential measurements indicate that the cultivars have a different drought tolerance (data not shown). More experiments will be performed in 2015
